On the Mark

Four elements are key to a healthy church: worship, evangelism, discipleship and ministry. In fact, these four elements comprise our mission statement as a church: Believing the Bible to be the inspired Word of God, the mission of First Baptist Church, Big Spring, Texas, is to evangelize the unsaved, disciple the saved, and nurture every believer.

One way to accomplish the work God has given to us is to be a church on mission. On Sunday, June 6, I will challenge our church to become an Acts 1:8 focused church. Prior to His ascension, Jesus gave to us a wonderful promise resulting in a powerful commission: But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

An Acts 1:8 focused church is not about size, staff, or even structure. Neither is it about a specific program. It is about a church being about its core mission which is to reach the world for Jesus Christ. An Acts 1:8 church is more about a congregation’s passion than its percentages. It focuses more on its burden than its bigness.

As an Acts 1:8 church we will embrace the Great Commission and engage the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ in our Jerusalem (Big Spring), Judea (Texas), Samaria (North America), and the ends of the earth (world). This is our opportunity to focus all areas of our church in fulfilling our mission statement and carrying out the Great Commission given by our Lord in Matthew 28.

There is still time to commit to “A Taste of Big Spring” July 26-30. Our people are needed to join Forsan Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of Sheridan, Arkansas, in many ministries in our community, including: light construction/roofing, Bible schools, sports evangelism, women’s outreach, block parties, and evangelism. Be sure to complete the missions form by March 30.
